We connect to one another in a myriad of ways -- by our voices and words, our smiles or tears, our body language and certainly these days by the technology that is ever present in our lives. Cell phones, blackberries, iPads, computers, television and movies, iPods, Skype -- the list grows constantly.

Now, for a moment, imagine that you can't connect or communicate with those around you. You can't say what you need or what you want, you can't talk with your family and friends, you can't connect with the people who care for you. Close your eyes. Cover an ear. Restrict the use of a hand. How does that feel? Imagine.

For the women of Riverbrook, connecting is what they strive to do each day: with each other, with staff, with their families and friends, with people who buy the products they make and with people who teach them new skills. It is a constant goal at Riverbrook that the programs and services we initiate enable residents to connect and live their fullest lives, to reach their greatest potential.

To enhance that goal, we are embarking on a new project.

The Riverbrook Connection Project

The Riverbrook Connection Project

The project will bring augmented and adaptive technology into the Riverbrook experience. This technology has the potential to augment abilities and bypass or compensate for barriers that disabilities create.

With your help, Riverbrook will institute staff training, individual assessments and consultations to ensure that we are connected in efficient, creative and meaningful ways. Please consider a donation to the Riverbrook Connection Project today.

We believe this initiative will not only enhance individual lives, but will also strengthen residents' connection within the Riverbrook community, assist the vocational program in increasing individual productivity, and encourage case conferencing with health care professionals for the staff.

How It Works

The staff will be trained in the use of augmentative and alternative technology equipment, in support of clearer and easier communication for residents.

Residents will then be assessed to determine their skill and comfort levels, using various technology tools such as iPads, Skype, enhanced visual and hearing devices and the computer.

With support and implementation, residents will be assisted in using new tools and technology, helping them to reach out to family, friends, colleagues and the staff.

Imagine the difference this will make in their lives and the lives of people who care for them! Help us connect by making a donation today.
